10/28/13 – Nonprofit Leaders Highlight Sector’s Importance on “Protect Giving Day”
By The Charitable Giving Coalition
On November 20, Washington, D.C. will be flooded with a diverse range of nonprofit and charitable sector leaders who will urge lawmakers to preserve the charitable tax deduction. The Charitable Giving Coalition sent a letter Thursday to each member of Congress about “Protect Giving Day” and expressed “continuing concern about proposed limits” to the deduction.
Members of the Coalition will meet with policymakers to clarify the crucial work that nonprofits do in communities across the country, highlighting the sector’s role as a safety net, especially during the recent government shutdown. Thousands of nonprofits and charities depend on the charitable deduction in order to provide countless services to communities in every state, particularly as funding evaporates while demand increases.
Leaders will also reiterate the profound impact the sector has on the nation’s economy.
“We support vital programs and services provided by nonprofits, which employ 10 percent of America’s workforce and provide 9 percent of wages paid each year (nearly $600 billion),” the Coalition letter explained.
