10/2/20 – CGC Applauds Expanded Universal Charitable Deduction in House CALMER Act
WASHINGTON, D.C.— The Charitable Giving Coalition (CGC) applauds the lifting of the cap on the universal charitable deduction (UCD) in the recently introduced Culture, Arts, Libraries, and Museums Emergency Relief (CALMER) Act.
The legislation introduced on Tuesday would eliminate the $300 cap on the temporary UCD that was enacted in March, and it would extend the availability to 2019, 2020 and 2021. The bill would also extend the suspension of AGI limits on cash gifts, which was included in the CARES Act, through 2021.
“The charitable deduction encourages individuals to give away more of their income and invest it in their communities, and eliminating the cap on the universal charitable deduction would encourage more of this giving when charitable organizations need it the most,” said Brian Flahaven, chair of the CGC. “This provision will not only support arts and culture organizations, but all other charitable nonprofits that rely on individual donations to stay afloat. We appreciate the inclusion of this provision in this bill, and we look forward to working with lawmakers to expand and extend the universal charitable deduction in the next COVID relief bill.”
